In the beginning

I want a way to recommend "The Book of Michael" by Lesley Choyce to every high school and young adult librarian.  It is one of the most moving books I've read in several years.  It tells the story of Michael Grove, a sixteen-year-old male whose girlfriend is found murdered.  Michael is tried and convicted of the crime and sentenced to an adult prison.  The true killer confesses after Michael has been in prison six months.  Michael gets released from prison, but struggles to return to a "normal" life.

Michael tells his story in flashbacks and those flashbacks have happy times and not-so-happy times.  The reader gets a feel for how Michael is treated after his release from prison and how he tried to adapt to his changed life.

The book appeals to male and female readers.  It would be an excellent choice for a book discussion group.  It offers a glimpse into why young people (and adults) sometimes make bad choices that affect them for the rest of their lives.  Please consider adding this very moving book to your collection.
